Australia's biggest attraction is its natural beauty. The landscape varies from endless sunbaked horizons to dense tropical rainforest to chilly southern beaches. Scattered along the coasts, its cities blend a European enthusiasm for art and food with a laid-back love of sport and the outdoors.
Camp classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, was filmed at the Imperial Hotel in October 1994, so no prizes for guessing its speciality. It's open seven nights a week, but the most popular nights are Friday and Saturday, which feature a special "Priscilla" drag show throughout the night.
The largest museum in Australia and one of the most diverse in the world, Sydney's Powerhouse Museum displays everything from science and technology to decorative arts and Australia's history. Of its 400,000 exhibits, only three per cent are on display at any one time. The heaviest - at 200 tonnes - is Locomotive 3830, while the biggest is a Catalina Flying Boat.
Visiting Glebe Market has established itself as one of the trendy Saturday activities in Sydney. The market is the haunt of cool Sydney-siders, who hang out round Glebe's cafés as well as Newtown slightly further out, with its crumbling student housing and wicked drag clubs. Everyone spends a leisurely Saturday chewing the cud, relaxing and checking the stalls, chock-full of second-hand clothes.
Paddington Market is a bit of an institution, popular with locals and tourists alike. It's stuffed full of stalls, mostly selling hand-made crafts and clothes. The clothes range from cheap street-market ware to pieces by start-up designers, and there are also a couple of very good retro clothing stalls. It's a good place to find a second-hand leather jacket.
