What will I be doing?

The jobs vary for each country just a little check out the below for more information on each placement.    

China -
Teach in China and you’ll immerse yourself in one of the worlds most ancient and fascinating cultures. Steeped in history and unparalleled n culture, China offers an exciting, challenging and memorable experience for anyone who has the desire and energy to discover it.  University Degree required.    


  • Salary: Up to NZ$1150 per month.
  • Bonus: USD$100 - US$1,150 bonus on successful completion of contract.
  • Accommodation: Private bedroom in rent-free fully furnished shared accommodation.
  • Locations: Guiyang, Hangzong, Kunming, Yinchaun, Yan'an, Yanliang, Weinan, Xianyang, Lianyungang, Wuhan, Zhengzhon, Dalian, Jinan, Xian (requires 2 years teaching experience), Dandong, Shenyang, Tangshan. Other Locations also available but have different details
  • Contract length: 6, 7.5, 12, 13.5 months Departure Dates: September & March (6 or 12 month contracts); January & July (7.5 or 13.5 month contracts).
  • Student age range: 4-50 years old.
  • Chinese lessons: Free Chinese classes in the school provided by a qualified Chinese teacher.

Indonesia - Indonesia is the fourth most heavily populated country in the world and its history of governmental instability and financial crisis has caused much hardship. As the country struggles to build itself a stable and prosperous future the work of TEFL tutors becomes ever more important.  You must be educated to the age of 18 years.    

  • Salary: Up to NZ$1230 per month based on a 23 hour week (except for teachers in Bogor who will earn up to 20% less than this).
  • Accommodation: If you choose to live in the accommodation subsidised by the school this will be your own air-conditioned room in a shared house. Houses have telephones, televisions, hot water and a maid and are within walking distance or a short journey by public transport to the school. The exception is for teachers in Bogor who will find their own accommodation (first 30 days will be provided for you).
  • Arrival: You will be picked up at Sukarno-Hatta airport (Cengkareng) in Jakarta by a member of your school's management team. You will be taken to your house where you can rest until the following day when you will go to the school for your orientation.
  • Locations: Schools are located in the city or outskirts of Jakarta, or in the suburb of Bogor.
  • Contract lengths: 1 year
  • Departure dates: There are departures every month except October and December (subject to availability)

Japan - If you are interested in Japanese culture, becoming a teacher is one of the best ways to go to Japan. By working in a state school system, you learn a lot about Japanese daily routine and life through interacting with students and teachers.  It's important to always be open minded; Japan moves in its own way and on its own time. So don't worry about feeling weird, it is just a different culture. Please note you will have to undertake an interview.  Must be aged over 21 years and have a University Degree.

  • Salary: Minimum 250,000 Yen, approximately NZ$2890 per month. (Correct at time of publication)
  • Accommodation: Full support and assistance given to find an apartment. A flat is 50,000 – 70,000 Yen per month
  • Arrival: All teachers are met at the airport and given a week of orientation and training for teaching in Japan
  • Locations: Mainly Fukoka, Hiroshima, Osaka, Nagoya, Hamamtsu, Yokohama, Tokyo, Chiba city, Hitachi.
  • Contract length: From 6 Months to 12 Months (Renewable),March 12 Months, April 11 Months, May 10 Months, June 9 Months, July 8 months, Sept 7 months (Arrive last week in August), October 6 months
  • Departure dates: Monthly, March to October
  • Student age range: 6 - 18 years old
  • Japanese lessons: Free Japanese lessons provided for all teachers
  • Cost of living: Accommodation 50,000 – 70,000 per month depending on location. Cost of living is approximately NZ$1380 per month

Korea - Korea is known for paying good salaries and is a great place to go if you want to save cash for further travels. Teach during the week in the bustling cities or relaxed provincial towns then travel in style on the new KTX bullet train at the weekends.  University degree required.    

  • Salary: Up to NZ$2750 per month based on a 40 hour week (22 hours teaching, 18 office hours). Pay could be up to 50% higher than this dependent on your experience and the school you work at.
  • Accommodation: During your week of training you will stay in dorm-style accommodation. During your time teaching you will stay in free, fully furnished Western style accommodation.
  • Arrival: You will be met at Seoul (Incheon) or Busan Airport (depending on which is nearest to your placement) and taken to your accommodation. The next day, you will be taken to the central training centre to start a week of training and orientation.
  • Flight reimbursement: £650 / €950 / USD$1250 / CAD$1450 / AUD$1580 / NZ$1800
  • Locations: Government schools located in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Gyeongsangnamdo Province, Gangwondo Province and Gyeonggi Province
  • Contract length: 1 year.
  • Departure dates: February and August.

Taiwan - With bustling cities, breathtaking landscapes and a colourful local culture, Taiwan is an almost irresistible travel destination. The country’s cities are at once exotic and familiar with their eclectic mix of age-old traditions and modern culture.   • Salary: Up to NZ$2500 per month based on a 25 hour week. You will also receive a bonus of approximately 8 - 17 ,000TWD on completion of your contract.
  • Accommodation: Not included, but will be given assistance in finding suitable accommodation.
  • Arrival: You will be met at Taipei Airport (TPE) and taken to your accommodation. The next day, you will be taken to the central training centre to start a week of orientation and training.
  • Locations: Schools are located around Taipei, Taichung, Kaosiung - with some other locations available.
  • Contract length: 1 year.
  • Departure dates: Monthly.

Thailand - Thailand is an ideal destination for TEFL teachers. As one of Asia’s most developed countries it offers all the comforts of home and a few extras: miles of beautiful beaches, historic temples, tropical jungle and some of the most motivated and lively students in the world.  University degree required.    

  • Salary: Up to NZ$1300 per month
  • Accommodation: You will be assisted in finding suitable accommodation by your employer
  • Flights: 12 000 - 32 000 Baht bonus / flight re-imbursement on successful completion of 12 month contracts
  • Arrival: Meet and greet service at the airport plus orientation and transfer to school
  • Locations: Bangkok and suburbs
  • Contract length: Six or twelve months
  • Departure dates: Monthly
  • Student age range: 3-25 years old

Am I eligible?    

TEFL Teachers should be native or near native English speakers.  If undertaking a TEFL placement with i-to-i, travellers need to be 18 years or above, with a keen interest in travelling or working abroad, able to demonstrate an ability to relate to and understand a foreign culture and willing to cope with the difficulties of living in a foreign culture.  University degrees are required for some placements.  Check you preferred destination above.
