The NFL, NHL and NBA are returning to Europe this fall to help celebrate the opening of the O2 Arena and newly-renovated Wembley Stadium in London! For the NFL, it’s historic since the league has never played a regular season game outside of North America. For all three organizations, it’s a really cool way to promote their sports. For you college student travelers, it’s an excellent opportunity to catch your favorite players in action in a different location.  Plus, with the airfare specials we’re constantly running and cheap hostels available, heading across the pond for any of these games would be budget-friendly and just flat out cool. Yea, these take place during the semester, but for you study abroad folks, it won’t be a problem. You’re just a quick plane, car, train or bus ride to the games (if you’re not already in town). For those of you chilling here in the U.S. this fall, just promise your parents you’ll do your class work on the plane.

NHL Sept. 29, 30

The National Hockey League is opening the 2007-2008 Season at the O2 Arena in London with the current Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks taking on the L.A. Kings. The game is September 29-30 and will be the third regular-season opener for the NHL in London. Games were played there in 1992 and 1993. The NHL is excited about this game because it’s looking to spread hockey’s popularity around the world.

A trip to London, especially a short trip, means you'll want to pack in as much sightseeing as you can in as little time as you can. For first-timers or it's-been-a-whilers, Big Bus London hits all of the major stuff in one day with a hop-on-hop-off service. Sit back and relax in the open-air top deck of the bus as a lively tour guide shares fun facts about what you're seeing as you cruise around town: Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, etc. When you want to get off and check something out, you do. When you're ready to reboard, you just catch the next Big Bus that comes your way.

The NBA has been holding games outside the country for almost 20 years. The first game was between the Atlanta Hawks and Soviet Georgia All-Stars (Hawks won 85-84). Since then, games have been played in Europe, Asia, Middle East and Latin America. American basketball has gained enough popularity in the U.K. that the game at the O2 Arena between the Celtics and T’wolves on October 10 is already sold out. BUT, that just means you’ll head to the pubs to tune in. A pint and some b-ball – it’s greatness.

We know how much fun London can be for student travelers - same holds true for Madrid, Rome, Malaga and Istanbul. Click the city names in the chart to discover the great places to stay and tours you can get in on during your visit, like "Ancient and Old Rome," "Flamenco Show" in Madrid, and hop-on-hop-off tours of Malaga and Istanbul!

NFL – Oct. 28

The Dolphins will take on the Giants at the newly-renovated Wembley Stadium on Sunday, October 28 in the NFL’s first regular-season game played outside North America. It’ll be the first of a regular series of international games. For the lucky fans who snag a seat in the 90,000-seat stadium or at a London pub, kick-off is at 6:00 p.m.

The Dolphins and Giants front-office folks say their organizations are excited about this game because both teams enjoy great support in the U.K. and Europe. The Mayor of London anticipates 10,000 Americans to make the trip to watch the game.
