How Trek America is working toward responsible tourism:
- Responsible Travel Guidelines: tour leaders learn how to conserve water, dispose of waste, minimize the impact of campfires, and respect the locals.
- Code of Conduct: people on the tours learn about their destination, learn the language, buy locally-made products, conserve precious resources, leave no trace, travel smart, avoid giving money or candy to children, and become 'carbon neutral'.
- Rely on locals: guides, transportation, food, accommodation and activities. Also, Trek America contributes to local charities and projects.
- Off-set carbon emissions that tour vehicles emit into the environment via tree-planting projects. Trek America is also in the process of evaluating its fuel consumption.
- Future progress is of constant concern for Trek America. It's focused on conserving at its home office, recyling on the road, and reducing its number of printed brochures.
