I say choose a place where you can see yourself becoming completely immersed with its culture.
It allows you to seek out tiny, hole-in-the-wall coffee shops to test your new skills, or take some risks and try to interact with the locals on their level, which so often tourists don't do.

After living in Rome for an archaeological dig in the summer of 2005, I went back to visit the site again this past July. Due to a great coincidence, my final night in the city happened to be that night Italy played (and won) the World Cup finals. My friends and I donned our Italy gear and headed down to the Circus Maximus to join the tens of thousands of raucous Italian fans watching the game on three huge outdoor screens. Between the setting of the Italian sun, the hundreds of waving Italian flags, and the near riot in the streets (fires and all) after the vicctory, it's something I'll never forget. | You really can't beat a trip along the gorgeous Mediterranean! Going in the off-season (in my case, February) means you're not dealing with the crowds, but the temperatures are just perfect. You can scale the Acropolis in Athens, wander the canals of Venice (and experience Carnival if you're lucky!), check out the amazing open air market in Nice, and experience tapas the way it was ment to be in Barcelona. |
