Top European Cities

Each of Europe's cities hosts it's own collection of historic riches, cutting-edge, creative neighbourhoods and fiercely independent civic pride. From the anicent classic of Rome to the romantic streets of Paris, we've picked our favourite European spots for a cultural/boozy (delete as appropriate) European vacation...

Quick sarcasm, cockney slang, Big Ben, the Royal family, a lot of pubs and even more tea. That's London baby! Tick off historic landmarks and dive into a pub for a pint and a bag of pork scratchings. Walk it off through the Royal Parks, or amble through the achingly cool East End. Swap galleries for the street art, vintage and vinyl of Brick Lane before drinking with Shoreditch's beardy hipsters.

Roma's key ingredients: mouth-watering food, mind-boggling art, a past steeped in mythology and legend, sprawling ancient ruins and The Vatican, just a stone's throw away. Traditional pizzerias and gelaterias, magnificent marble sculptures, Baroque churches and soaring basilicas await you. Lazily watch the world go by in sun-soaked piazzas and lap up the lifestyle of this seductive city.

You may think Paris is just for loved-up couples smooching around the Eiffel Tower, but there's far more to the City of Love. Stuff your face with delicious fresh pastries, strut your stuff down the infamous Champs Elysees, get lost in the Latin Quarter or check out the all-singing, all-dancing Fete de la Musique. And don't forget to pay a visit to our old friend the Mona Lisa!

To say that the Czechs like beer is an understatement. Generally cheaper than bottled water and available to buy at any time, you're going to want to mentally (and physically) prepare your liver for your Prague adventure. Not a beer fan? No worries; explore the city's medieval warrens, tuck into a tasty strudel and gaze at the gothic spires of Prague Castle.

Quirky and colourful, 'the Dam' has red-light districts, cannabis cafes, bikes galore and more canals than Venice. Chuck in to the mix that it's home to Heineken, more than 1,280 bridges and thousands of museums that document everything, from sex to Anne Frank; it's pretty perfect for culture (and not so cultural) vultures.

Outstanding art galleries plus fine dining and top nightlife; yes, you're in Madrid. Imagine a painting palette which brings together the world of Picasso, Dali and Miro, mixed with some of the best tapas you've ever tasted and too many bars to rattle a cocktail shaker at. For you creative cats, you'll struggle to choose between the Museo del Prado and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.

When is the best time of year to visit Europe?

Europe is pretty massive, so the weather can vary quite a bit from country to country. In winter, (generally November - March), northern parts of Europe are covered in snow and throughout December, magical Christmas markets pop up all over the place. Head to Germany, Austria or Prague for a traditional European Christmas, or to the French Alps for world class skiing and snowboarding. In summer time, the Greek Islands, Turkey, Croatia and the Mediterranean coast are glorious - you'll find endless stretches of sandy beaches to kick back and relax on. Prices tend to be highest in Europe at Christmas, Easter and during the summer vacation (July and August) - travel during off peak times and you'll be sure to bag yourself a sweet deal or two.

Do I need a visa to visit countries in Europe?

Australians tourists and holiday makers visiting Europe for up to six months don't need to apply for a visa in advance. But if you plan on staying longer, or working in an EU country, you'll need to apply using the Australian Goverment website. Speak to one of our travel experts for more information.
