Student Exchange Australia offers Australian high school students the chance to live overseas for up to twelve months in any one of 20 destinations.
You’ll be placed with a host family and live the way they do. You are not a guest and this is not a holiday. You become one of the family and do all the things they do – including the chores!
What will I be doing?
You will be placed with a carefully selected host family. They are volunteers that can live anywhere in the country to which you are going.
You will:
- Get to know how others live and come to see the world from another perspective
- Learn another language and open career doors you didn’t know existed
- Test yourself and acquire independence and maturity
- Make new friends and appreciate old ones even more
- Gain experience and judgement
- Learn about the world first hand
What does it cost?
Depending on destination, duration and time of year:
- 2 months from $5,950 to $6,490
- 3 months from $5,990 to $6,990
- Semester from $7,990 to $8,990
- 1 Year from $8,990 to $9,990
What does it include?
- Your program fee covers all your dealings with Student Exchange Australia for the particular program you will be participating on
- Return economy airfare with a recognised airline from your nearest capital city
- Travel to and from your host family at the beginning and end of the program
- Accommodation and meals with a volunteer host family
- Host family screening and selection
- Enrolment at your host school
- Comprehensive medical and travel insurance (you may opt to buy additional insurance)
- Application process & selection interview
- Assistance with your visa application (you must pay the visa application fee)

Price guarantee: Once you have submitted your application and paid your $500 deposit the published price is protected from any currency fluctuations or increases in airfares.
Who runs it?
Student Exchange Australia Ltd is an Australian not-for-profit company registered as a secondary exchange organisation with Departments of Education around the country.
Long established relationships with international partners ensure the highest standards of care and support to participants. They maintain a national network of volunteer community coordinators who work in support of students and families during the exchange experience.
Many of their staff have either been exchange students themselves, have lived overseas, hosted a student, speak other languages or have travelled extensively. They understand the challenges faced by students, families and volunteers. This experience assures you of the very highest levels of service and support.
Am I eligible?
You must:
- Apply while still in school and meet the age requirements (see below)
- Be in good physical and mental health
- Have maintained equivalent to a C-grade (or above) average since Year 9
- Be mature and open-minded
- Be flexible, adaptable, responsible and ready to learn
- Be between 15 and 18 years old. (Exceptions can be made for 14 and 19 year olds)
